A non-profit organization ,HelpAge India recently launched SOS App (save our seniors) to help and protect the elders of our country who are treated as a burden in most of the families.
This app is available for download free of cost. It’s a one stop destination for all the information right from telling the elderly about their legal rights, protection from police, financial planning, and discounts in the market especially for the elderly and lastly the way to stay connected with other people in the network.
The app also provides useful helpline numbers to the elderly in grief.
Mrinal Srikanth, liaison manager, HelpAge India, Andhra Pradesh, stated “It took took them three months to bring out this app which is specifically for the senior citizens and which is first of its kind as nothing of this kind has been introduced earlier.He also said that the app is functional all over India and very soon many new features would be added to this app for making it more suitable for our senior citizens.
The app can be downloaded from Google Play Store available on all android phones.
According to a survey HelpAge India conducted in 2015 and it revealed that almost 73% of the population believed that elder abuse existed in India, almost 60% of youth said that they would be ready to help if they see any incident of elder abuse anywhere. The survey results of Delhi, Chennai, and Hyderabad were very shocking as they said they are not willing to help if they see any kind of elder abuse around them.
India is expected to see a rapid increase in the population of elders as per the official figures. The population of people above 75 years is likely to increase by 340% between 2011 to 2050.
By the year 2050 the number of people above the age of 60 is predicted to be 340 million. India’s elderly population which is above 60 years accounted for 8.6 the census reveled.
